What’s an Archives?

According to the National Archives 2023 “an archive is a place where people can go to gather firsthand facts, data, and evidence from letters, reports, notes, memos, photographs, and other primary sources.”

One notable feature of the Vernon Parish Public Library is its dedication to preserving local history. This is where our Archival Room comes in. Within its climate-controlled walls, we have a vast collection of historical documents, photographs, and records that tell the tale of Vernon Parish from its earliest days to the present. All these items are carefully preserved in acid-free boxes and folders.

As host to various events, workshops, and seminars throughout the year, the Vernon Parish Library provides a space for residents of all ages to come together, exchange ideas, and celebrate the unique culture and heritage of their region.

We strongly believe history should not only be preserved but shared. To do that we need the help of you and others in our community.

Two ways to Help

You are giving us material to keep protected and to make accessible to the public in the best possible way while keeping the integrity of the original material. This might mean for us to make digital or hard copies of your donated items as to not damage the original but allow the public to safely view the item.

You are letting us borrow your material to make a digital and physical copy. We will return your original promptly.

We are preserving Vernon Parish history, not only for you, but for your generations to come.
